Heavy Heart Gathering – October 6
When you’re feeling sad, worried, grief-stricken, lonely or depressed and someone asks how you are, it’s easy to say, “I’m fine.” But over time, if you’re holding weights like these, it wears on you. Sharing feelings can really help, and that’s why the Caring Team invites you to attend our next Heavy Heart gathering at 6:30 pm on Monday, October 6 in the NSUC sanctuary.
Our time together will include some thoughtful words, insightful readings, calming music, refreshments, and an opportunity — but no obligation — to share what’s on your heart. To assure a sense of trust, anything shared that evening will be kept confidential. There’s no need to register, so please join us. If you have questions, please email Glenn Mills or speak with a member of the Caring Team.
NSUC Drum Circle
By popular request, we are hosting a drum circle at 6:30 PM, Tues, October 7 in the NSUC Sanctuary!
Communal drumming is a spiritual practice in many cultures around the world. It is done for healing, protection, meditation, prayer, building community, and just plain fun! Come feel the power & joy of drumming in community in our very resonant sanctuary. We will raise lots of positive energy for ourselves and the world.
If you can, please bring a potluck dish for our “feasting” afterward. Also, feel free to bring rhythm instruments if you have them. No musical experience necessary.
October NSUC Book Club Meeting
In October, the NSUC Book Club will be reading Solito, a memoir by Javier Zamora.
“Trip. My parents started using that word about a year ago – “one day, you’ll take a trip to be with us. Like an adventure.” Javier Zamora’s adventure is a 3,000-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.
At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.
A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.
Please join us in the Hearth Room on Saturday, November 1st, at 10:30am for a deep dive into what is a heart wrenching and deeply moving book. Please note that this is the October meeting even though we are meeting on 11/1. The November meeting is scheduled for 11/15.
